Hackers Target Government, Consumer Websites, and Industrial Systems

Cyber aggression in Israel has surged, marking a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. As the fighting entered its sixth day, fatalities on both sides crossed the grim mark of 1,300. The situation took a digital turn as hackers infiltrated Israel’s smart billboards, using them to display pro-Hamas messages and images. Check Point Software Technologies, a cybersecurity company, reported these cyber intrusions.

Threatening Messages and Crypto Scams Targeting Israelis

In addition to manipulating smart billboards, hackers have resorted to sending threatening texts and WhatsApp messages to Israelis. These messages are originating from numbers in Yemen and Afghanistan, as revealed by Check Point. Opportunistic cyber criminals are also exploiting the situation, disguising crypto scams as pro-Israel aid requests. These attempts to access Israel’s industrial systems have spiked recently, according to Yossi Applebaum, the CEO of cybersecurity firm Sepia.

Geopolitical Origins of the Cyber Threat

The surge in cyber activity is suspected to be originating from Iran, Syria, and a pro-Russia hacktivist group known as Kilned. Yossi Applebaum noted a significant increase in attempts to breach networks, emphasizing the rapid escalation within a short timeframe. Previously, there were only a few attempts within 24 hours, but now, such attempts are occurring at a rate of several per hour.

Impact on Education and Municipal Websites

Even students have not been spared from these cyber assaults, especially with many attending classes remotely due to the violence. Israel’s Ministry of Education issued a warning to teachers and families to enhance the security of remote-learning tools. In a concerning incident, a man in military attire with a rifle appeared on screen during a high school video conference.

Municipal and consumer websites have also been targeted in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks since the assault from Gaza began. These attacks overwhelm websites with traffic, temporarily taking them offline and causing disruptions.

The Challenge of Critical Infrastructure Security

While DDoS attacks are considered relatively unsophisticated, the real concern lies in potential attacks on critical infrastructure. These could be orchestrated with support from hackers in Iran, as pointed out by John Hale, a professor of computer science and cybersecurity at the University of Tulsa. He emphasized the significant impact of an organized effort backed by a nation-state.

Citizen Cyber Brigades and International Support

Israel was already a prime target for nation-state cyberattacks in the Middle East, according to recent research by Microsoft. The wartime hacking surge has led to the formation of citizen cyber brigades. Members of Israel’s technology community established the Israel Tech Guard, an all-volunteer group searching for hostages and missing individuals using clues from online posts.

In response to the rising cyber threat, Israeli cyber volunteers are working to protect crucial services, including missile-alert apps. Many of these apps lack robust security features, having been developed by volunteers over the years. Other initiatives focus on databases, aid coordination platforms, applications for first responders, and location services for displaced civilians.

International Cooperation in Cyber Defense

Drawing parallels with citizen cyber brigades in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion in 2022, it is evident that collective efforts are crucial to safeguarding critical infrastructure. The U.S. deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, Anne Neuberger, announced increased cyber support for Israel. This support might include redundant communications links and replacement equipment for damaged technology.

Israel’s Cybersecurity Landscape

Israel has a rich history as a hub for cybersecurity startups, many of which were founded by former members of the Unit 8200 military intelligence unit, specializing in cyber warfare. The country hosts over 400 cybersecurity research and development centers, with its domestic cyber companies boasting annual exports exceeding $3.5 billion.

Combating Disinformation and Fear

Amidst the ongoing crisis, Israel faces another challenge: rampant disinformation and online threats regarding cyberattacks. Cyber specialists emphasize that fear and panic within society are precisely what terrorist groups like Hamas exploit. It’s essential to combat disinformation and ensure accurate information reaches the public, even amidst the chaos of conflict.
